The 2022 election is fast approaching and with that comes the pressure of making sure that
everyone eligible will be able to exercise their right to suffrage. As of writing, we only
have one month before the last day of voter’s registration i.e. September 30, 2021. So if you have not done that, I have included some resources which you may find helpful at the end of this blog.
With that in mind and before the release of new data for the 2022 polls, it is necessary and only fitting to explore who voted last 2019 general election. Using available data from the Commission on Elections, I did a little #datavis exercise to see some interesting quick stats with particular focus on Region VIII.
Below you can see the results of the #datavis exercise.
For the 2022 polls, the Comelec estimates around 198,000 first-time voters in Eastern Visayas to be enlisted. However, according to Comelec Eastern Visayas Regional Director Jose Nick Mendros, as of June 5, 2021 only 68,076 have approved registration. Source: Philippine News Agency, 2021
In Region VIII, Leyte has the highest number of registered voters in 2019 at around 1.3 M. This is followed by Samar, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Southern Leyte and Biliran, respectively. This scenario is consistent with the population of each province.
